In 1983, a brave man named Stanislav Petrov played a crucial role in protecting our planet. On a day like today, September 26, he had an important job. He was responsible for watching over a special system in the Soviet Union. This system had a very important job too – it was meant to tell if any dangerous missiles were coming towards their country from the United States.

But something scary happened on that day. The system made a big mistake. It thought that five missiles were heading their way from the United States. This was a really scary situation because a nuclear war could start if those missiles were real.

Now, what Petrov did next was super important. Even though he was feeling very nervous and under a lot of pressure, he didn't panic. Instead, he trusted his gut feeling and his brain. He thought, "Hmm, if the United States were really going to attack, they'd probably send a lot more than just five missiles."

So, Petrov made a very wise decision. Instead of telling his boss that the missiles were coming, he told them that something was wrong with the system. And guess what? He was right! There were no missiles. It was all a big mistake.

Because of Stanislav Petrov's bravery and smart thinking, he saved the whole world from a terrible disaster. If he had said those missiles were real, it could have been the start of a really, really bad war with nuclear weapons. So, we can all be thankful to him for keeping us safe that day. He truly was a hero!
